1. General

  • Q What is the Learning Commons?
    A  The Learning Commons is a space carefully designed to encourage and support the process of transforming information into knowledge, and knowledge into creation. It offers a stimulating environment where encounters with people, events, information, and other things bring learning to life. Its mission is to provoke curiosity and enhance the education of all Doshisha students. We encourage you to browse this website for ideas about how to approach this special place.
  • Q What are the hours?
    A  The basic hours are as below, but are subject to change.

      9:00~22:00(Mon to Sat), 10:00~17:00(Sun)
    ・(KYOTANABE)Learned Memorial Library Learning Commons

  • Q Who can I talk to for help?
    A  The Learning Commons has a full complement of staff members ready to provide guidance and support. Visit the "Staff" for details.

2. Using the Learning Commons

  • Q Can anyone use the Learning Commons?
    A  The Learning Commons is a space created to support the learning of Doshisha University students. In principle, the facilities are not open to those from outside of the university; however, outside individuals may be permitted entry to particular events sponsored by the university or affiliates.

  • Q Can the Learning Commons be used for club activities or events?
    A  No, spaces in the Learning Commons are not available for extracurricular activities such as those for clubs or circles. Such activities are not consistent with the academic mission of the Learning Commons.
  • Q Can we use the Learning Commons for regular classes ?
    A  The following areas can be used by reservation on a temporary basis to conduct classes that take advantage of the functions and characteristics of the Learning Commons but cannot be reserved on a regular basis.

  • Q Can I use the Learning Commons for online job interviews, online company information sessions, etc.?
    A  The Learning Commons is a place for learning, so it cannot be used for online job interviews, online company information sessions, etc.

3. Areas

  • Q How can we use the Info Diner or Group Study Rooms?
    A  Visit the "Information Counter to make a reservation to use these spaces. Your student ID card is required and there must be at least two people in your group. You can reserve a space for a maximum of two hours at a time. If you wish to use an area for more than 2 hours, an additional reservation can be accepted if there are no other reservations for that time.
    *You can reserve a space up to two weeks in advance at the Information Counter. You can make up to three separate reservations, although no more than one for any given day.

  • Q Are there places where we can have coffee and snacks?
    A  Please refer to "Management and Operation of the Learning Commons" on "Guideline "

4. Services

  • Q I have questions about how to work some of the equipment...
    A  For help using the projectors, screens, electronic blackboards, or other equipment: Please consult with Student Staff members wearing navy blue jacket (called "kon-jan") or visit the Information Counter to speak with a Learning Support Coordinator (IMADEGAWA). For help with borrowed computers (DoKoDeMo PC) and printers, speak with IT Support Assistants. For help using software in the 3rd-floor Multimedia Lounge (IMADEGAWA), speak with Student Assistants in the Multimedia Lounge.
  • Q What kind of support is available in the Academic Support Area?
    A  Numerous dedicated staff members are available in this area, including academic staff, instructors, and Learning Assistants (LA). These individuals are happy to provide various types of academic support. For example, they can provide advice on how to write a report or create a presentation, how to decide on study topics, or how to search for relevant books and other resources.
  • Q Can I borrow stationery?
    A  No, please bring your own.
  • Q I heard that students can have name cards printed, how can I find out more details?
    A  Inquire at the Print Station, on the 3rd-floor to learn more about this service. There you can also print posters, stickers, pamphlets, and more. (IMADEGAWA)

5. Visiting the Learning Commons

  • Q Can I request a tour?
    A  In principle, we welcome visitors to explore the facilities on their own and do not provide tours. Visitors from outside of the university are welcome to visit the Learning Commons during normal weekday hours. Please note that visitors must sign in at the Information Counter before entering the facility.
    When visiting the Learning Commons, please observe the following rules.
    • Please do not disturb students who are studying.
    • You are welcome to take photos of the facility, but please do not photograph the faces of students.
    • Please do not take photos of printed or digital signage that may include images of students’ faces.
